In Re: Fortieth Statewide Investigating Grand Jury, 45 WM 2017

This is a sealed record appeal taken by the Catholic Dioceses of Harrisburg and Greensburg from an Order of the Supervising Judge of the Fortieth Statewide Investigating Grand Jury entered June 15, 2017 at Allegheny County. The grand jury, which was impaneled in 2016, has been investigating allegations of sexual abuse by priests in six Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania, including Harrisburg, Greensburg, Allentown, Pittsburgh, Erie and Scranton.  Notwithstanding the appeal, the investigation brought by the Attorney General’s office has been ongoing, and the press has reported speculation that the Grand Jury will complete its work soon. The appeal was initiated by the filing of a petition for review from the Supervising Judge.  The original documents in the case are sealed, although the Supervising Judge at the Court’s direction has filed a redacted opinion, and the parties likewise filed redacted briefs and a redacted reproduced record.
